stiles and allison are siblings in every way but blood, and they have been ever since stiles’s father adopted allison when her family died. together they live with stiles’s younger brother, isaac, on a property owned by the martin family. when a wealthy young man named scott mccall moves to beacon hills, he and his cousin erica reyes and their friend derek hale are invited to a party to rub elbows with the rest of the town. at the party, allison and scott meet and fall in love at first site while derek insults and offends stiles coldly, causing stiles to grow contemptuous towards him. allison and scott quickly grow closer, especially when allison gets sickly one evening at scott’s home.

when lydia martin, heir to the martin fortune and eventual owner of the stilinski home, arrives, she makes it clear immediately that she wants stiles. complicating matters is kate, a pretty older woman who tells stiles all about derek hale. she accuses him of withholding her inheritance, and stiles sides with her immediately, finding her story pitiful and unjust, and he grows to resent derek all the more. unfortunately, derek proves to be one of the few people who can match stiles’s wit time and time again, frustrating stiles.

when lydia finally demands stiles’s attentions, he turns her away with the support of his family. soon after, scott and erica and derek move back home to sacramento, leaving allison heartbroken. she goes to stay with distant relatives in sacramento in hopes of running into scott again. lydia gives up on stiles and instead begins to date his childhood friend jackson. time passes, and, eventually, stiles goes to stay with jackson and lydia. on his visit, he meets with lydia’s boss, peter hale. peter, as fate would have it, is derek’s uncle, and stiles is reunited with derek over dinner at peter’s home. derek is attentive to stiles, though mostly quiet, and compliments him subtly every so often. when peter applauds derek for separating scott from allison, stiles realizes what derek’s done and leaves.

derek follows him and confesses, awkwardly, that he cares for stiles and wants to be with him. stiles rejects him for several reasons: allison’s broken heart, kate’s withheld inheritance, and stiles’s own wounded pride. derek explains only that kate’s story isn’t true before they part ways for a long time. while they’re separated, stiles tries to understand what derek said about kate, and he tries to come to his own conclusions on the matter. when he goes to stay with his relatives in sacramento and they visit the hale estate, stiles finds a humanity in the home that he’d never have attributed to derek. he also meets laura, derek’s beloved sister, and ultimately runs into derek. in his home, derek becomes a different person—gentler and more polite, which throws stiles’s heart into chaos.

his love woes are put on hold when isaac goes missing. kate is suspected immediately, as she was the last person to be seen with him and hasn’t been seen since. derek, hearing the news, leaves stiles immediately, and stiles returns to beacon hills to help search for isaac. they find him only after kate is imprisoned and a plot to burn down the stilinski home, to send a message to derek, is revealed. stiles finds out that it was derek who found kate, furthering stiles’s confusions about derek.

derek returns to beacon hills with scott, and scott announces his love for allison. allison accepts him back into her life entirely, forgiving him immediately. when peter hale makes a visit to the stilinski house to confront stiles—and to explain that stiles is unworthy of derek’s affections—stiles sends peter away and refuses to deny his feelings for derek.

when derek confesses his feelings again for stiles, stiles considers all of the ways that he misjudged derek and all of the ways that derek has shown his true character since they first met, and stiles accepts his confession and allows himself to fall in love.

“stiles, what the hell have you done to derek hale?”
“i have no freaking idea, dad.”
